Additional Details

Tafereel has a notoriously unstable collation. Cole said of it: "[S]o strange was the mode of issuance that no two specimens, even of approximately the same actual issue date, are exactly the same. Neither the textual material nor the engraved prints are always identical. . ." The "regular complement of prints" numbers 74 engraved items, however the work is often seen with far more or far fewer, and in Sammelband fashion it often includes separately issued broadsides related to the bubbles. The list in the present example calls for 56 plates, however it appears that number 49 was never bound in. All things considered, it is a stretch to label this copy "incomplete" in the usual sense. Such made-to-order concoctions were not uncommon in early-18th century Holland; the unique Zee-Atlases of the time stand out as prime examples of this mode of publishing. Cole, The Great Mirror of Folly.
